Position Overview

Graduate and undergraduate research assistants are students who, in the course of their academic training, are employed in part-time or temporary research positions, where the student's academic training is based in part on the research performed. All duties and services of graduate and undergraduate research assistants are to be carried out under the supervision and direction of faculty or administration. These duties may include assisting a faculty member in descriptive, exploratory or experimental research; publication activities, data collection, data management and/or data analysis.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

The duties of graduate research assistants vary according to the
nature of the research, creative, and scholarly activities (RCSA) project in which they
participate.


In general, a research assistant is a student who is actively engaged in an inquiry or
investigation and who, through effective collaboration with a faculty mentor, has the
potential to make an original, intellectual, or creative contribution to their discipline.


The desired outcome for the student should include transformative learning and
dissemination (e.g., presentations at regional and national conferences, publications in
periodicals and academic journals, exhibitions, performances, etc.) of their findings.


All duties are performed under the direction and supervision of a member of the faculty.


Progress reports are required to be submitted at the end of each academic semester.


Research assistants may not perform routine tasks or responsibilities related to clerical
or other duties which are deemed outside of their RCSA project.

Qualifications/Experience Required

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS Fall/Spring Semesters All student employees must be enrolled at least half time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half time enrollment for Fall/Spring is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. Summer Semester Undergraduate Work-Study students must be enrolled in 6 hours to work on campus and Graduate Work-Study students must be enrolled in at least 5 hours. All other students must be enrolled in at least 3 hours to work on campus. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in Fall classes in order to work on campus, but will be required to pay FICA taxes. If the number of hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum hours required to work, the student must obtain a letter from his/her advisor stating the number of hours needed to graduate. Call Human Resources Dept. for further information. To be eligible for hire as an graduate research assistant must have graduate standing in any field. Research Assistants may not perform routine tasks or responsibilities related to clerical or other duties which are deemed outside of their project.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

To be eligible for appointment as a graduate research assistant, the student must:


(1) Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular degree-seeking student at UCO;
(2) Must have Graduate standing in any field and be enrolled in a minimum of 6
graduate credit hours at UCO for the duration of the award, with exception to those
graduate students who are enrolled in their final semester before graduation (they must
enroll in at least 3 credit hours);


(3) Have a minimum of 3.0 GPA for graduate students – if enrolled in graduate studies
for the first time, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 in the
undergraduate major;


(4) Have satisfied all incomplete grades at the time of his/her appointment (thesis,
practice, directed study, independent study, special problems, and internship credits
excepted);


(5) Have received faculty mentor notification of eligibility and are a grant recipient.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Excellent communication, both written and oral.


Detail oriented.


Required character traits: Dependability, thoroughness, and initiative.


Have sensitivity of intercultural communication, and have good interpersonal skills.

Physical Demands

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers – typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms.

Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required.
