College/Department Overview

Mitchell Hall Theatre showcases the Theatre, Musical Theatre, Dance, Opera, and Music performances for the University of Central Oklahoma. We are needing students to work as stage crew members for these different performances. This position requires a lot of commitment and dedication to our craft as a theatre and performance space.

Position Overview

Student will assist staff or faculty in supporting the classrooms, labs, or departments. Duties may include, setting up, picking up, and checking-in classroom items for classes and theatre performances. May be requested to set-up audio/visual equipment for performances.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

Students will work as crew for shows in Mitchell Hall; these shows include theatre, musical theatre, dance, music concerts, and opera performances. Students will be working as stage hands, fly rail operators, possibly working the light or sound board during shows, plus other essential show tasks. Students will be required to help with load-ins and strikes before and after shows. During load-ins crew will be helping staff and other students set up the scenery, lights, and sound equipment for the shows/performances. Strike will consist of removing these items and getting the theatre space back to original order. Students will choose or be assigned to shows throughout the semester and will be required to be present for the entire shows run, from load-in and Technical Rehearsals through Dress Rehearsals and the Performances of the show, and strike following the shows end. This could entail late working hours, and full commitment to the rest of the crew and cast/performers.

Qualifications/Experience Required

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS Fall/Spring Semesters All student employees must be enrolled at least half time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half time enrollment for Fall/Spring is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. Summer Semester Undergraduate Work-Study students must be enrolled in 6 hours to work on campus and Graduate Work-Study students must be enrolled in at least 5 hours. All other students must be enrolled in at least 3 hours to work on campus. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in Fall classes in order to work on campus, but will be required to pay FICA taxes. If the number of hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum hours required to work, the student must obtain a letter from his/her advisor stating the number of hours needed to graduate. Qualifications/Experience Preferred

Previous show experience as a crew member, and knowledge of how a performance operates. Experience in theatre lighting and sound is a plus.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Basic knowledge of how a performce is supposed to operate. Willingness to work through the entire run of a show, detail oriented, and be able to take directions from stage manager and/or supervisors. Knowledge of basic theatre terminology; e.g. up stage, down stage, fly in, fly out, stage right, stage left, etc. 

Physical Demands

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers – typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms.

Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required.
