Position Overview

Study specifications in blueprints or sketches to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required. Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using tools of the trade. Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment. Build or repair cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, or other wooden fixtures . Install structures or fixtures, such as windows, frames, floorings, trim, or hardware. Verify trueness of structure, using plumb bob and level. Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace, using hand tools.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

Reports to Carpentry Supervisor and works under general supervision. Performs general carpentry work, floors, roofs, walls, stairways, doors, windows, cabinet making, desk, chairs, and other structures. Responsible for the construction, maintenance and repair of structures, equipment and other articles of wood. Utilizes hand and power tools used in the carpentry trade. May work shifts other than the traditional Monday-Friday, 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m. hours; as well as other shifts and schedules for snow removal and/or other emergencies.

Qualifications/Experience Required

Performs administrative or manual tasks. Requires general education or vocational training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

Must have 1 to 2 years experience in light construction and/or carpentry trade, including use of power woodworking machinery. Must obtain and maintain all licenses required for code compliance and special tool operations. Must have a valid Oklahoma driver's license. Must pass pre-employment screening. Ability to safely use power actuated nail guns, backhoes, concrete saws, and equipment as required. Sufficient dexterity and coordination to operate equipment common to the trade, especially trucks and industrial tractors. Reads, understands manuals and instructions printed in English and documents legibly in same. Good oral and written communications are needed to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. Knowledgeable in sound human relations practices in establishing and maintaining effective working relations within the Physical Plant and UCO Community, as well as outside vendors, in order to fulfill the expectations of this job description.  Knowledge of use and disposal of chemicals common to the trade in a manner which protects oneself, others in the work area, and the environment. Willing to attend seminars, etc. to upgrade skills and/or obtain required training to retain certification relative to trade. Ability to work safely in and around moving mechanical parts of equipment and be protected in areas with fumes or airborne particles and toxic and/or caustic chemicals common to the trade. Ability to lead people, communicate clear, concise directions and coordinate work assignments of subordinates.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Performs general carpentry work; floors, roofs, walls, stairways doors, windows, cabinet making, desk, chairs, and other structures. Responsible for the construction, maintenance and repair of structures, equipment, and other articles of wood. Provides repair and maintenance of existing buildings. Selects wood and cuts to size, sands and surfaces. Installs suspended ceilings. Installs metal studs, track and drywall. Measures and constructs cabinets. Installs ceramic and floor tiles. Repairs windows. Repairs or replaces doors and hardware. Operates shop tools, table saw, radial arm saw, drill press, grinder, etc. needed to efficiently complete the task. Performs general clean up including emptying trash, sweeping, and removal of snow/ice from surfaces. Available to help with or fully abate a facilities emergency. This may necessitate the use of a radio/cellular telephone. Further, a prearranged shift change may be implemented for predictable emergencies like inclement weather.

Physical Demands

Repetitive movement of hands and fingers. Typing and/or writing. Frequent standing, and/or sitting. Occasional walking, stooping, kneeling or crouching. Reach with hands and arms.

 

Visually identify, observe and assess. Ability to communicate with supervisor/students/colleagues. Regular physical attendance required.

This position requires a physical.  The requirements are as follows:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds from floor to waist level.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 200 feet.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and carry up/down 30 stairs.
  • Ability to walk regularly for long periods of time across campus.
  • Ability to sit occasionally.
  • Ability to use and lift 2-10 pounds over head with hands and arms regularly.
  • Ability to climb in high places using a ladder or balance frequently.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend and crawl occasionally.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull 40-80 pounds to waist frequently.
  • Ability to carry 80 pounds 200 feet occasionally.
  • Ability to push or pull dolly loaded with up to 120 pounds for 300 feet occasionally.
  • Must have close, distance, and peripheral vision.
  • Depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
