Position Overview

Perform maintenance, and upgrade of networks, including servers, routers, switches, firewalls, remote access systems, and network management systems. Monitor network connectivity and ensure high quality data transmission. Provide technical support to various departments and users with regards to LAN/MAN/WAN (local/metropolitan/wide area networks) and cloud-based networks (e.g., VPN and BYOD). Serve as a liaison with vendors and other third-party providers. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions

Installs, troubleshoots and maintains communications equipment and associated software and hardware. Responsible for all aspects of installation, routing, and other dependent services. Troubleshoots video conferencing hardware and software. Responsible for establishing Quality of Service. Informs users of existing and new software, hardware and other services available. Establishes control systems for monitoring computer usage and administers the system. Responsible for all devices reporting correctly. This includes switches, routers, wireless controllers, uninterruptible power supplies, network cameras and all devices that can report through a ping, SNMP, SNMP3, or syslog. Researches and recommends hardware and software to enhance campus network. Responsible for recommending complete solutions. Assists with research capabilities for organizations serving the campus such as the City of Edmond, Edmond Chamber of Commerce, etc. Responsible for network equipment inventory. Responsible for logging all work in tracking system. Responsible for disaster recovery process for campus network. Responsible for initiating network change management requests. Maintains a customer-service attitude. Adheres to and complies with the University's shared values (3Cs) and the Office of Information Technology's Code of Ethics. This position is on-call 24/7/365 and requires the successful candidate to have "high-speed" Internet access to their residence. "High-Speed" infers Cable modem or DSL measured within the Mega-Bit upload and download speeds. This position requires the successful candidate to maintain a smart phone on which to receive telephone calls, email and SMS messages from servers and authorized OIT personnel. Ensures systems documentation follows best practices, is up-to-date, accurate, and tested. Continually updates skills and knowledge relative to the position and the technology industry. Reports to IT Executive Director. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Experience Required

Requires a university degree in related field or 4+ years of equivalent work experience in chosen filed that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts. Requires the application of expertise in a chosen field to achieve results.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

Previous documented experience in TCP/IP, AppleTalk, SNMP, NetFlow, Cisco equipment and fiber optic communications preferred.


Excellent communications skills. Ability to work independently and maintain courteous attitude in dealing with students, faculty, staff and visitors. Must be familiar with LAN topology and software including servers, switches, and routers. Advanced knowledge of network security as it pertains to preserving the integrity of user's data. Intermediate knowledge of network security as it pertains to preserving the integrity of user's data.
