  • Position Overview

    Plans, organizes, conducts and maintains occupational health and safety programs for the prevention and reduction of workplace accidents and improving safety awareness. Prepares and revises safety rules for the operations of equipment, classes and other work areas where safety hazards exist. Inspects facilities and makes on-site corrections of flagrant safety violations and hazardous conditions. Review procedural manuals for consistency and completeness. Provides advice and guidance to departments regarding procedures and regulation. Performs a variety of risk management functions including evaluations and recommendation pertaining to liability exposure.

    Department Specific Essential Job Functions

    Works in a cross-functional role in a diverse community in the achievement of departmental goals and objectives. Keeps the Director informed of activities. Performs Job Safety Analysis and recommends safety equipment, safe work procedures, and communicates with departments to achieve safety excellence. Performs ergonomic evaluations of workstations for the campus community and makes recommendations for the workstation and equipment. Performs indoor air quality evaluations for the campus community and reports findings along with recommendations. Analyzes processes and makes recommendations for improvements. Maintains up-to-date knowledge and understanding of federal, state, and local fire, safety, environmental, and health regulations and procedures, as applied to public institutions. Coordinates safety and environmental projects with the UCO Campus Community. Works with minimum supervision on safety and environment problems, projects and activities to include development of written programs, standard operating procedures, and aids with auditing and development of safety programs. Manages the hazardous waste operations therefore must possess knowledge of principles, procedures, and standards for the receipt, handling, storage, shipment, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and biomedical waste. Assists with accident and incident investigations to include recommendations for corrective measures. Ability to respond outside of normal working hours on an on-call basis. Responsible for UCO Asbestos Management Program to include keeping current licenses. Coordinates asbestos projects with the UCO Campus Community, outside agencies and contractors. Tracks costs associated with all asbestos related activities. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications/Experience Required

    Requires a bachelor's degree in field plus 3+ years of relevant experience in the chosen field that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts. Requires the demonstrated application of expertise in a chosen field. Must have and keep current Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification and Asbestos Management Program licenses.

    Qualifications/Experience Preferred

    Experience in a higher education environment.


    A solid general knowledge of OSHA and EPA rules and regulations relative to safety and health program management. A working knowledge of laboratory safety and biosafety principles and practices. Knowledge of asbestos operations and licensing requirements through the State of Oklahoma as an Asbestos Inspector/Management Planner, Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor. Knowledge of hazardous waste operations. Ability to organize resources and establish priorities. Capable of developing and delivering presentations using computer based programs. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point programs must be demonstrated. Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Must possess a working knowledge of Industrial Hygiene equipment to include high/low volume pumps, sound level meters, confined space meter, microbial sampling equipment, and other equipment as needed.
