The Graduate Assistant (GA) is a 20 hour per week graduate assistantship. The primary responsibilities of the Graduate Assistant are largely based on the specific duties from a college or division. The position will apply theory to practice for the specific office or area in which the position is housed. The Assistantship shall be for the academic year (10 month position), with the opportunity to continue for the following academic year if agreeable to the supervisor and the Graduate Assistant. GA positions are academic and should include significant mentoring and professional development. Graduate assistant should be considered part-time professionals in the field and given projects reflective of that role. Individual may not hold other employment on campus without prior permission from college or division and HR.
The primary responsibilites for this Graduate Assistant position will be to assist with the implementation and success of the Black Male Initiative. The Black Male Initiative Program is a first-year experience retention program that is designed to provide relevant experiences for black males that will ensure thier success academically, professionally, and socially.
The ODI Graduate Assistant position will include four specific jobs duties that function within two main roles: Advising and Program Implementation. The Graduation Assistant expectations are as follows:
Coaching (45%) - The Graduate Assistant has the opportunity to empower, collaborate, advocate for, and support students to help them learn, thrive, and succeed. The Graduate Assistant builds relations (both interpersonal and intrapersonal), pushes students to see their personal goals as well as goals for programming within student organizations, and enhances their abilities to empathize and collaborate.
Programming (25%) - The Graduate Assistant will aid BMI to organize, create, and implement programming, to promote cultural inclusion and sensitivity, social justice awareness, and critical self-reflection. This programming is done on a small-scale level (cultural education - i.e. ribbon shirts, shawl-making, Black love matters, etc.) and on a university-wide level (Welcome Black Week, Heritage Months, Powwow, Multicultural Pageants, etc.)
Presentations (15%) - At times, students organizations, campus offices, or classes will ask for an overview of the ODI, introductory diversity activities, and cultural awareness activities.
Assessments (15%) - At times, the Graduate Assistant will assess the varying levels of success on all aspects of programming. These are typically assessed through surveys and critical reflection.
Other duties as needed.
Preference will be given to students enrolled through the University of Central Oklahoma's Graduate College in pursuit of a Master's Degree in a related field. ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS Fall/Spring Semesters All student employees must be enrolled at least half time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half time enrollment for Fall/Spring is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. Summer Semester Undergraduate Work-Study students must be enrolled in 6 hours to work on campus and Graduate Work-Study students must be enrolled in at least 5 hours. All other students must be enrolled in at least 3 hours to work on campus. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in Fall classes in order to work on campus, but will be required to pay FICA taxes. If the number of hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum hours required to work, the student must obtain a letter from his/her advisor stating the number of hours needed to graduate. The qualified candidate will demonstrate evidence of excellent written and oral communication skills; strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills; demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and to conduct oneself in a highly professional and ethical manner; and will have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
